THIS IS THE SPACE I NEEDED. I'M BUILDING IT FOR YOU, TOO.
I'm Mayra Libertad Fernandez-Martinez, and for years, I answered the calls no one wants to make and frankly, no one wants to take either.
As a 911 dispatcher, I was the voice on the other end when someone's world was falling apart. The domestic violence victim whispering because her abuser was in the next room. The father performing CPR on his child. The overdose. The accident. The last breath.
Every shift, I carried voices I couldn't save. Moments I couldn't forget. Pain I couldn't put down.
And like so many first responders, like so many caretakers, like so many people with caregiver burnout… I turned to alcohol to cope.
It worked — until it destroyed me.
THE BREAKING POINT
Addiction doesn't announce itself. It creeps in quietly, disguised as relief.
One drink to unwind after a hard shift became two. Then three. Then I couldn't face the day without it.
I was drowning, and the thing I thought was keeping me afloat was pulling me under.
Recovery saved my life.
It wasn't dramatic. It wasn't easy. It was meetings, therapy, one day at a time—all the things that sound like clichés until they're the only things keeping you alive.
I got sober. I did the work. I rebuilt.
But recovery was lonely.
THE LONELINESS NO ONE TALKS ABOUT
Here's what they don't tell you about getting sober, or what we end up finding on our own:
The world isn't built for people like us.
Social gatherings revolve around alcohol. "Let's grab drinks" means bars. Restaurants push wine lists. Even coffee shops close at 6pm, leaving nowhere to go when you need connection most.
I missed the ritual of unwinding. I missed having a third place—somewhere that wasn't home, wasn't a meeting, but felt safe.
I was sober. I was healing. But I was isolated.
And I knew I wasn't the only one.
THEN I DISCOVERED KAVA
Kava is a root from the Pacific Islands, used for 3,000 years in ceremony and community. It calms your nervous system without clouding your mind. It relaxes your body without stealing your clarity.
For me, kava was a revelation.
It gave me the ritual I'd been missing—the act of sitting down, holding a cup, intentionally unwinding.
It calmed the hypervigilance I'd carried since my dispatcher days. It released the tension in my jaw, the tightness in my chest, the racing thoughts I couldn't quiet.
And kava bars became my sanctuary. A place where I could decompress without drinking. Where I could connect without performing. Where I finally felt like I belonged.
Kava helped me heal.
THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED
One night, sitting in a kava bar with my mom in Tampa, I thought:
What if there was a space like this for people who need it most?
First responders carrying trauma they can't talk about
People in recovery searching for connection without temptation
Caregivers giving everything until there's nothing left
Anyone seeking calm, community, and a place to just... breathe
A space where you don't have to explain yourself. Where your sobriety is honored. Where your trauma is understood. Where you can finally put down what you've been carrying.
That's Zero Proof Social.
WHY THIS MATTERS
I built Zero Proof Social because I know what it's like to need help and not know where to find it.
I know what it's like to sit in your car after a shift, too wired to go home, too exhausted to do anything else.
I know what it's like to be newly sober and terrified of losing your social life along with your drinking.
I know what it's like to give and give and give until you're empty—and have no place to refill.
If you're reading this and thinking, "This is exactly what I need"—
That's why I'm building it.
WHAT WE OFFER
🥥 KAVA MOCKTAIL RECIPIES
Traditional Pacific Island kava served with intention. The calm without the crash. The ritual without the regret. Safe for recovery. Healing for trauma.
🎨 EDUCATION & HEALING
Weekly art therapy nights. Monthly peer support circles for first responders and caregivers. A space where you can process, create, and connect—without judgment, without pressure, without alcohol.
💙 COMMUNITY & A SAFE SPACE
This is a sanctuary for people who answer the call, people rebuilding their lives, people caring for everyone but themselves.
You don't have to be strong here. You just have to show up.
WHERE WE ARE NOW
Our physical café is coming to Tampa soon. But we're not waiting to build community.
Right now, we're gathering online:
Sober & Creative Nights every Wednesday (art therapy on Zoom)
First Responder Healing Circles monthly (peer support for those who serve)
Caregiver Compassion Circles monthly (for those who give everything)
Kava education, recipes, and resources (so you can start healing at home)
Our doors aren't open yet. But our community already is.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF...
✓ You're in recovery and tired of feeling isolated in your sobriety
✓ You're a first responder carrying trauma no one else understands
✓ You're a caregiver running on empty with nowhere to refill
✓ You're seeking connection without the pressure to drink
✓ You're looking for calm in a world that won't stop spinning
✓ You need a place where you don't have to explain
You belong here.
MY PROMISE TO YOU
I'm building Zero Proof Social with the same care I wish someone had shown me when I was struggling.
This space will be:
Trauma-informed. We understand triggers, boundaries, and the weight you carry.
Recovery-friendly. Alcohol will never cross our threshold.
Judgment-free. Your story is yours. Your pace is yours. Your healing is yours.
Community-first. Because no one heals alone.
YOU'RE NOT ALONE
If you're reading this and thinking, "I needed to hear this today"—
If you're exhausted from pretending you're okay—
If you're looking for a place where you can finally be honest—
This is it.
This is your space.
